Reflection Shadows In The Morning Sun. Beauty Is Everywhere If You Look For It. I Look At Sunrise.

by Jon Katz

Photography has taught me that there is beauty everywhere if only you look for it and let it in. This week, I’ve been taking photos of the morning light and the light and shadows it casts in the house when the sun comes up.

I find the images beautiful and iconic. Here are eight images taken this morning; I hope you find them soothing and eerily beautiful. I do.

No need for captions except for one; they speak for themselves. All of them were taken in the downstairs of our farmhouse in the hour after sunrise.

Quilt inspired by our trip to George O’Keeffe’s home in New Mexico.

Bedlam Farm Journal, Morning, Saturday, November 25. Plenty Of Color, Plenty Of Light

by Jon Katz

This morning, plenty of color, plenty of light. We went out for breakfast. My car battery is dead, AAA is on the way, and we got more things for the “ugly” Christmas party at the Mansion; above is Maria’s fabric drying on the clothesline. We have Maria’s car to do our chores in. Otherwise, we are in for the weekend. No peckerheads squawking about my lobster today, thanks for all the good words.

Dollar Store: Getting Christmas Trinkets For the Mansion “Ugly” Sweater Party.

by Jon Katz

We’ve moved into high gear for the Manion’s “Ugly Christmas” party just before Christmas. Army of Good Soldiers sent some sweaters, and Maria and I collected some. We’re returning to the Senior Center thrift shop on Monday to get a dozen more. Today, we went to the Dollar Star to fill a cart with Christmasy things and decorations.

Some sweaters have Christmas markings, and those that don’t will be given some. Maria and Paryese, the Mansion Activity Director, will help the residents fix their sweaters and make them “ugly” if they aren’t already. My job is to collect the sweaters.

I’m figuring out how to use the Dollar Store and Thrift and Consignment stories to help the residents at the lowest possible prices.  A cartload of Christmas decorations was $34.

The residents are excited about this party; we will ensure they have what they need. Thanks for your support, those who donated, and those who sent their discarded sweaters to Paryese, The Mansion, 11 S. Union Avenue, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816. I think we will be all set on Monday or Tuesday. At the Senior Center, a bag of discarded sweaters costs $5.

A Dog In Panic. Thanksgiving Dog And Child Love Story: Robin And Sandy Reunited

by Jon Katz

My daughter’s family moved to a new home over the holiday. They took Robin’s dog, Sandy, to a boarding kennel; they had to sleep in a neighbor’s apartment for a few days while moving.

When they brought Sandy home, they put him in his crate in the new house downstairs, where he usually slept in their apartment.

Sandy panicked all night and couldn’t sleep despite being calm in the boarding kennel. He cried and struggled to get out of the crate all night. I suggested to Emma that Sandy might be worried about Emma, who he watches over when  Robin is home; he worries about her and follows her everywhere.

I got these photos last night. Sandy slept with Robin and was calm and at ease all night. I think his crate is moving to a new place. Or he might sleep with Robin, as he did last night. Robin understood and comforted him when they were reunited.

Sandy is a rescue dog from the South. He is devoted to Robin always naps with her. As long as he knows where Robin is, he is safe and at ease in their new home. I love dog/love/people stories like this. Lucky dog, lucky kid.

Color And Light, As Promised, Bedlam Farm Journal, Friday. New Idea: Are Flowers And Garbage The Same Thing?

by Jon Katz

Flowers and garbage are both organic, writes the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh in an essay that startled me and got me thinking.

Looking deeply into the nature of a flower (which I have done), he writes, “You can see the presence of the compost and the garbage. The flower is also going to turn into garbage, but don’t be afraid! You are gardeners, and you have the power to transform garbage into flowers, fruit, and vegetables. You don’t throw anything away because you are not afraid of garbage. Your hands can transform it into flowers, lettuce, or cucumbers.”

Hanh argues that the same thing is true of happiness and sorrow. Sorrow, fear, and depression are all a kind of garbage. These bits of garbage are part of real life, and we need to look deeply into their nature.   This is what I do when I meditate and look for the truth about myself.

You can practice to turn these bits of garbage into flowers,” he says.” It is not only our love that is organic; your hate is, too. “So you should not throw anything out or pretend it doesn’t exist. You have to learn how to transform our garbage into flowers.”

I can relate to this strange bit of philosophy and healing. Maria never throws anything out and can connect all living things to flowers or one another. She intuitively understands the things that link the world together. It isn’t a natural idea to me, but it is an exciting one, and the more I think about it, the more I realize that I have been trying to do this for some time now without realizing it.

Hanh’s analogy caught my eye and has my head spinning. I initially didn’t think of it or see the connection, but I can grasp what he says.

In a sense, this is what I have been working to do for some years now, with some success, although there is still work. There is something significant in that idea.

I’ve tossed a lot of garbage, although I have never collected it to a flower. Yet I do have the power he is talking about to transform one kind of feeling into another, to turn hate and anger into love and empathy, and to identify the parts of me I need to accept, understand, and let go of. I love this parable, even though it might keep me mulling it tonight, but I wanted to share it.

I won’t think of flowers and/or garbage in the same way.
