Big News For Good: A Special Day For The Cambridge Food Pantry: Sarah Is Asking For Two Of The Healthiest Breakfast Cereals And Food Support For The Dog And Cats. They Need Help Too.

by Jon Katz

It’s a special day for the Cambridge Food Pantry requests for humans and animals. The two healthiest breakfasts requested are Oat Bran and Life cereal (see below).

(Above, three remarkable women unpacking the boxes you and the food bank  sent: Lori, Barbara, Maria.)

Thanks for all you do for the Food Pantry. Sarah showed me the shelves filled because of you, which stirred the heart and soul.

Above: Yesterday’s Amazon Delivery. The Army of Good keeps on giving and giving. Thank you so much.

My research shows that oat bran has 50% more fiber than oatmeal. Fiber decreases blood pressure and bad cholesterol, manages blood sugar, and aids digestive health.

More research: Life cereal is an excellent option for the entire family because it is high in nutrition, low in sugar, and contains good fiber and protein.

The special request for the day is dog and cat food (below) for the new dog and cat shelter. We are out of both, and the family dogs need support and a permanent place on a pantry shelf. This is a very popular item for the families and the Army of Good, a nest of animal lovers.

Sarah is seeking help with two of the healthiest breakfasts the kids need badly:

Kellogg’s Cracklin’ Oat Bran Breakfast Cereal, Fiber Cereal, Family Cereal, Original, (3 Boxes), $14.94.

Life Breakfast Cereal, Original, 13 Oz Boxes (3 Pack), $11.97.

Thanks for sending these messages through Amazon. They are a but and affirming gift among the pantry volunteers.

SPECIAL Requests: Dog And Cat Foor the new animal shelf:

Cesar Files in Gravy Adult Wet Dog Food, Filet Mignon and New York Strip Flavors Variety Pack, 3.5 Oz, Pack of 12, $13.97.

Purina Friskies Wet Cat Food Variety Pack, Tasty Treasures Prine Filets (With Ocen Fish and Tuna, With Chicken and With Turkey) – Pack of 12, 5.5 Oz Cans, $8.33.

The newest trend in the Army of Good Pantry Support is people browsing the Amazon Pantry Support Wish List and making their own choices—often in a large box or two. This is great fun for me, wonderful for the pantry, and feels good in times of stress and confusion. We thank you.

I hope you feel good about yourselves; you are angels to me and others.

Look at what we have sent in the past few days, a partial list (about half):

Thanks for your messages to the volunteers; they love them.

The Amazon drivers love the food pantry; the workers know them all by name. “They’re like family,” said one volunteer.  We love them so much.”These boxes arrived yesterday.

  1. Does it bother you at all that you’re encouraging a program that directly supports Jeff Bezos, who is doing everything he can to subvert a free press? I know you’ll answer that Amazon is convenient, that people who use the food pantry need to eat, etc. etc. These are easy excuses. I was particularly disturbed that you actively encouraged purchases last Friday, which was supposed to be a day of economic blackout from companies who (like Amazon) have canceled DEI and who support billionaires over the rest of us. Relying on Amazon has become less and less morally tenable.

    1. Cyra, I had no intention of answering you at all, nor do I believe this is any of your business. How dare you assume what I know or what I follow on what days. How creepy, how presumptuous. You don’t know anything about me. I think we should keep it that way. I don’t argue my beliefs or decisions with strangers, and I won’t debate this with you. I will tell you how little respect I have for your narrow-minded and insensitive letter. As a longtime journalist and a former reporter for the Washington Post, I don’t need any lectures about Jeff Bezos from strangers on social media. I’m sure it doesn’t bother you that you are encouraging the hunger and suffering of hundreds of people and their children because of your political beliefs. I will do whatever is possible to get the most food for hungry people into the pantry the cheapest and fastest way.
Starving children for a political cause is the worst kind of political extremism to me. I will do everything I can every day of the week to help people whom everyone else has forgotten get enough food for themselves and their children. At the bantry, we don’t embrace labels. Good people are welcome to contribute in any way they wish, at any time they want to. We seek food in the fastest and inexpensive way. So far, that’s Amazon. I do not tell people when to help. And I am not in charge.
You sound like you lost your heart. My excuse, as you call it in your sneer is the very best excuse I can imagine and one I am most proud of. Feeding children and their parents who are hungry is a wonderful excuse.
People of every kind of politics send food to the pantry; they are never asked about their politics, nor are donations forbidden on days of your choosing. Starving is a lot worse than buying things from Amazon. Ideologues breed ideologues, as we are all learning. I recommend donating to the food pantry. It feels good, perhaps a better use of your time. For the record, I was particularly disturbed by your self-righteousness and indifference to hunger. Somewhere in your lecture, you might have mentioned it.
