Sarah decided it was time for a clean-up and house cleaning after the holidays; her members were excited. When the kids were home from school, friends, and relatives came over, and the pantry families struggled to make the holidays warm, happy, and meaningful, even when they felt otherwise.
They did feel otherwise when a bitter cold struck, and all of their spare money went to buy fuel in sub-zero temperatures. (The Pantry’s shelves went empty.) And they were busy all the time.
We helped get them a Thanksgiving dinner and warm and healthy foods for Christmas. We helped when the cold snap wiped out their fuel money. Nothing is ever free, and it’s time for the houses, apartments, and hotel rooms to get a good cleanup.
I see it as my responsibility to help with the next step—cleaning up the house after the always intense holiday celebrations, even when they are somber and painful. Nobody likes being poor and worrying about how to feed their children or where the next meal comes from. I’m buying and sending all three items.
Cleansing is a morale boost. These families may not be living where they want to live, but we came to help them eat well and enjoy the good feeling of a clean home.
We found bargain prices for the clean-up: $5.54, $2.28, and $7.28. Thus, we can give each household what they need to clean up for $15.81.
