Good News, A Turning Point For The Cambridge Pantry, And For The Army Of Good: Wasting No Time, We Are Looking Ahead To Something New, The Pantry Kitchen Supply Shelf

by Jon Katz

This past weekend was a landmark time for the Cambridge Food Pantry, a disturbing time and one of support and hope.

After last weekend’s scary winter cold crisis, the Pantry Staff unpacked, sorted, and distributed the Army of Goods’s emergency and heroic response. The pantry will be closed until Friday, giving it time to fill its shelves.

Sarah’s newest initiative, The Cambridge Pantry Kitchen Supply Shelf, was overlooked in a rush to distribute food. She gathered a dozen utility kits and some can openers—many families live in hotels and motels—but they were gone in a flash.

It was a great hit; the mantra customers were happy and surprised when they saw them on the shelves.

She’s excited about it. Most families don’t have kitchen utensils, which will be on the wish lists in January. I’m pretty tired, but our little vacation didn’t last long. I couldn’t be happier.

We’ve sent thousands of pounds of food to the pantry, and the spirits are watching us. The sun is shining. Thanks so much. The kitchen project is a significant innovation.

I wanted you to see what you have done and what is coming. Sarah is an innovator who is working to fill stomachs and boost morale.

Thanks for all of your support this past weekend. Sarah asked me to take a day off because she is running out of room. She said the irony is that all the great food you send will be gone in less than a week. That’s pantry life: a cat chasing his take knows he can never catch up.
I look forward to seeing you tomorrow. The story goes on.

The Army Of Goods’s urgent supplies are still arriving; this load came last night.

A sneak peek at the Pantry’s new Kitchen Supply Shelf, which is soon going up on their wish list. It is surprisingly inexpensive and badly needed.

Sarah is getting the kitchen shelves ready.

Thanks for the wave of supporting messages from the Army of Good Donors. It is a huge morale boost for the volunteers, and the lovely notes, as Sarah calls them, go right up on the pantry bulletin board so the donors can see them. Please keep them coming if you can; they matter.

Sarah says “thanks” for all you have done for the Cambridge Food Pantry as she takes down the Christmas decorations. Sarah has at least 100 jobs there; I have lost count.
