Flower Art. When Light Enters Our Eyes, It Triggers Messages Heading For the Brain. See Which One Makes You Happier. Sadder.

Karen Haller is the leading international authority in the field of Applied Colour Psychology and the author of The Little Book of Color: How to Use the Psychology of Color To Transform Your Life: “When light and color enter our eyes, striking a cone in the eye, it triggers the release of a chemical transmitter, initiating electrical messages that are conveyed to the brain, eventually the hypothalamus, together with the pituitary gland, a pease structure at the base of our brain. The color of flowers affects a surprising number of changes in our body – metabolism, appetite, body temperature, water regulation, sleep, autonomic nervous system, and sexual and reproductive functions.”- The Little Book Of Color.

Above: Collage, it makes me smile.

What that means, according to Keller,  is that color isn’t just a visual stimulus. It also creates physiological changes within us. To put it simply, it delivers an emotional experience. This is why I have suddenly been drawn to flower photography, and it has delivered emotional response after emotional response, from anger to joy to fear. I feel these responses day after day.  The sensation we know as color is our brain’s interpretation of the signals coming into our eyes when light enters them. Each color can arouse a different emotion.

See which makes you smile, laugh, sad, cry, or angry. See you in the morning.
