Flower Art, First The Soul, Now The Heart. October 2, 2024. Learning Just How Light Works. Working To Get Better All The Time

by Jon Katz

My motto: “I have already settled it for myself, so flattery and criticism go down the same drain, and I am quite free….”

I decided that if I could paint that flower on a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty…

— Georgia O’Keeffe.

______

I’m enjoying my experiments with light and plan to take advantage of them when the dark days come. These flowers are all part of that experience. Light is essential in how I take pictures; every time I try, I learn something new about it.  Flowers respond almost dramatically to light. I want to keep getting better.

That means trying new things and taking some risks. I don’t follow any of the sacred rules of photography. That’s working for me. I’m a fan of Beavis and Butthead. Because I am stupid, I am free; because I don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing, I’m free to do what I like. That’s where I see a connection to George O’Keeffe, not in talent but in living in my own vision, not anyone else’s.

Have a good day, and I count my blessings. There is so such pain and suffering in the world. See you in the morning.

  1. Jon, your flower art is beautiful, and I start my days with it. The flowers lift me up and help me focus my gaze in the direction that feels good. I remember a Stuart Wilde quote, he said something like if one was a bit dim, they should be grateful as the world wouldn’t grind them down, as it will the “smart” ones. There is much wisdom to that.
