Flower Art, Improvised. Turning A Little To My Archive, Pupils Too Dilated

by Jon Katz

If you can believe in what you are and keep to your line – that is the most one can do with life – Georgia O’Keeffe.

I have spent the past few years figuring out who I am – strangers often try to tell me that – and also learning to keep to my line and stay out of other people’s. That is the best I can do with life, if not a popular idea on social media. Or, as one of my favorite governors said, “Mind your own damn business.”

I had a temporary crisis with my Flower Art Program. I promised to put fresh pictures up every day since March, and I have been faithful to that. Today, I hit a roadblock. I saw my Eye Surgeon, who dilated my pupils to ensure the eyes were healing correctly.

I still can’t see much clearly, but the surgery was excellent. There is no “Homicide” tonight for me, but I got some flowers and kept my promise. I expect to put flower photos up all winter and through the dark days of winter.

The surgery went well, but my dilated eyes prevented me from seeing the camera viewfinder or the precise location of the flowers I was trying to photograph.

I decided to slog my way through this, and I did. I returned to find two or three photographs I’d never published before and invited them to come along. I’ll do this all winter, so it’s good practice to work on. I took half of the flowers today, half weeks or months ago.

I included a portrait of Maria in my Flower Art because she introduced me to the beauty of wildflowers and has always supported my photography. These flowers are dedicated to her. I worry that she always gives more than she gets.

Okay, I’m done for the day. I hope to see you in the morning.

  1. That’s great, Jon! I had my cataract surgeries in 1999 and was amazed how well I could see afterward.

You mentioned “Homicide.” Would I be correct that you are watching episodes from one of my favorite
TV shows from the past, “Homicide: Life on the Street.”? My favorite of many episodes is entitled “Subway.”

Glad to learn that you are now seeing 20/20, not the old TV show.
