Wanted! The Velveeta Experiment! Adopt One Pantry Item Buy It Every Now And Then: Getting The Most Popular Foods Onto The Shelves: Velveetal, Tide, Coffee

by Jon Katz

Something new and different.

I propose a solution given Sarah’s constant concern about keeping the most popular food items on the pantry shelves.

What if we adopted one of these foods (in addition to the daily requests) and made it a habit to purchase that item regularly? I believe this is a feasible and effective solution that we can implement with our current resources.

Together, we can address the Cambridge Food Pantry’s most pressing issue—the constant depletion of the five or six most popular items.

And the bargain rates have been so low we can donate ongoing needs as well.

My personal commitment to purchasing Tide as my food item, one or two a week, is just a small part of the impact we can make. Our collective effort will truly make a significant difference.

No matter how many we send, they disappear quickly. This is a testament to the recipients’ love of the things we send. However, it also underscores the crucial need for us to maintain a steady supply to meet the demand.

Committing to sending one or two of our adopted items a week has already made a noticeable difference. I see some people are doing this automatically.

This manageable commitment doesn’t strain my finances, and I’m confident that if we all contribute similarly, we can ensure a steady supply of these items on the shelves.

This is a tangible way for us to impact the pantry’s stock levels significantly.

This is tricky. Sarah doesn’t have much storage room, but she’s frantic about keeping these items on the shelves: Tide Laundry Detergent, Diapers for babies, Dark Roast Ground Coffee, and one of the hottest now: Velveeta Shells and Cheese.

She loves suggesting people adopt the most popular items and keep them flowing into the pantry system.

Sarah will keep these items on the list for at least a week, perhaps permanently, once we see how the experiment works. I’m excited about it; we might break new ground in the growing world of food pantries.

By picking one and adopting it, we can boost the morale of the guests and volunteers. Let’s see what happens.

It might work.
