Cambridge Pantry SOS: Tomato Emergency! The Pantry Has None On The Tomato Shelf: $1.34 And/Or $1.15 Will Fill It Up Again

by Jon Katz

Sarah messaged me this afternoon; I could tell she was alarmed. In some ways, Sarah reminds me of teacher Sue Silverstein; she cares deeply for the welfare of the families who come to her for help navigating rising prices, rapidly declining government aid, lower wages, and divorce or separation.

Sarah and I are in sync. I knew there was trouble; she never sent me items with empathy shelve in mid-day if it wasn’t serious.

She signals me when something gets serious. Today, after 56 families came through, Sarah saw that the “tomato shelf” was empty. She sent me an SOS, and I said I would ask the Army of Good for some help and spend $10 or $15 myself. Like Sue, Sarah fights daily for the people in her care. She never permits anything that would demean them, ignore their needs, take their dignity, or forget about them.

Even a few cans of tomato or pasta sauce would satisfy the needs of more than 100 people. The same is true of past sauce. I hope we can fill that shelf; the price is right.

Tomato Sauce, 15. Oz, $1.15.

Hunt’s Meat Pasta Sauce, 24 Oz
