Beautiful Morning: Maria And Her $2 New Pair Of Red Pants (She Just Painted Them)

by Jon Katz

Life with an artist. Maria bought a new pair of orange pants at a thrift shop—buying retail is an offense to her faith—and then, for various reasons, she decided to wear her new and expensive (for her) orange pants red, which she did.

I love these pants; they speak to the true Maria. She wears them when she goes outside to shovel manure and then changes into another $2 skirt or pants. I love it, and I am crazy about these pants. She offered to make some for me, but I declined.

  1. Jon Katz, Thank you for your wonderful book, Saving Simon. Haven’t finished it yet but am loving it. Donkeys are special animals, you can just tell it by looking at their eyes. I’ve only known a couple of Donkeys in my longish life, but hope to change this eventually, as there is a Donkey Rescue not too far from my home in Santa Fe NM.
While living in Greece in the 1960s I saw Donkeys terribly mistreated and beaten and then, when one poor old fellow died, he was just tossed over a wall and left on a pebbly beach. It broke my heart to see him just tossed aside. Then I had the pleasure of riding one a couple of other times.
A few years ago a friend and I went to see a Polish movie called Eo, about an old circus Donkey who was abandoned and left at a filthy barn in the country. No one loved him any more and he was eventually sold to a butcher. I couldn’t watch it any longer and left the theater in tears.
So when I saw your book on Thriftbooks I just had to buy it. Thank you again for loving all our four legged and winged brothers and sisters on this planet.

    With gradtitude,

    Liza Littlefield
