King Zip In His Castle, Surveying His Kingdom. It’s A Happy Kingdom, He’s A Happy King.

by Jon Katz

We stack old and rotting wood in a pile, waiting for the next Solstice celebration, where it will be burned at night. Zip loves this pile and often crawls into it to spring out at unsuspecting mice and moles. He doesn’t seem interested in going after birds, and the barn swallows don’t put up with that. They are challenging birds and fierce protectors of their babies.

If he comes anywhere near their nests, they buzz bomb him and drive him out of the barn. Alvin the chipmunk outfoxed Zip again, popping his head out of the Chipmunk Hole, then disappearing down the hole when he got close. I think they’ve figured him out, unlike the mice.

Sitting on his throne is a beautiful vantage point for Zip; he can gaze at the woods, the fields, the pond, and the pasture at any time. I’m learning what it means to have a happy cat, which makes for a happy man.

  1. Zip is happy because he gets to be a cat, all the way. You haven’t made him your little fur child, where you impose a life on him. All of his needs are met, and he is free. I love the pics and stories of King Zip!
