Late For My Morning Meeting. Sometimes, Zip, I Will Be Late

by Jon Katz

The Arctic cold has arrived; it’s not much worse than a typical January in Upstate New York. Zip is serious about our morning meetings. I was late this morning – he appeared between 9 a.m. and 9:30 without fail.

If I am late, as I was this morning, he shows up at the back door, glowering and seemingly annoyed. He grudgingly allowed me to pick him up and scratch his neck. He relented and then pursued something he heard walking by the barn.

I can’t claim to know what Zip is thinking, but I know he takes our meetings seriously, one in the morning, one in the late afternoon. He thinks he is in charge of the farm now, but the reality is different. Sometimes I’ll be late. He knows what he wants. But as I explained to him this morning, I also have other things to do, believe it or not.

He doesn’t. He’s a Diva.

  1. Cats are the masters of all they survey. Smart is the man/woman who learns that early in their relationship with the cats in their lives. But we love them anyway and accept the love they give on their own terms. I believe our pets are a gift and as a gift they are perfect.
The last time that I went to the library, I checked out two books by a new author. I appreciate the new authors you suggested and would like to return the favor. He is a mystery writer and I hope you will enjoy his books. His name is Abir Mukherjee. The setting is 1920’s Calcutta.
Thank you for the lovely flower pictures, your pictures of the farm and animals, for sharing of your love for Maria, and the ever changing emerging of yourself.

  2. Cats are very serious about their schedules… I’ve learned that we work for them, they don’t work for us… I agree they are Divas!

  3. Zip KNOWS he is in charge of pretty much all that he surveys on your farm. My cat Bill always made sure that I understood that.
