Color And Light. Mother Nature As A Cat: Catching Us, Playing With Us, Torturing Us A Bit. Next Up, Arctic Air

by Jon Katz

Mother Nature is beginning to remind me of Zip, who catches helpless things, plays with them, and tortures them for fun and, sometimes, for food. One day, it’s flood, then ice, snow, wind, water, and wind.  Our most important purchase for the farmhouse in recent years seems to be a generator.

She seems to be reminding us every other day that our planet is bleeding from our waste and greed.

Today, wind and heavy rains, and tonight, below zero for days. We are ready. Here is today’s dose of color and light. Stay warm and dry. See you in the morning.

  1. In the 35½ years that I have lived in my house, I have never been so thankful that we had a sump pump installed 30 years ago when the footing drains collapsed and our basement started flooding nearly every time it rained. We got tired of having to constantly clean up water and I found a great company that installed a drainage system and dug a deep hole to put the pump in. For years it only ran in February when the ground thawed. Last year we had 65+ inches of rain and my SP has been cranking along like old faithful. On the 7th we got 7½ inches of snow only to have it wash away on the 10th. Five days later my SP is still running several times a day. Hopefully with this cold, the ground will freeze and the water will stop flowing for a few days.
