Portraits: Kim and Asher, Dinner

by Jon Katz

It is satisfying to feed animals, listen to them chew, and see their excitement. Hay is not just a snack for them but life itself, and they approach it enthusiastically and purposefully. Above, Kim, below Asher.

  1. Kim has a vey delicate face. I don’t know all the sheep but can spot her immediately. She’s a beauty. Lovely photo.

  2. Hi Jon,
    FYI, uh oh!
I’ve had your critique of “Maestro “ on my mind. I also saw the movie. So today I watched a 2 hour documentary from “American Masters” on YouTube about Leonard Bernstein that provided the depth into this man you missed in the movie (I don’t own a TV). I don’t know if you’ve seen this, but it’s brilliant. I don’t know if I would have gotten around to watching this doc unless I’d seen the movie, and your critique, but I did and I’m grateful. I watched him as a kid and the intro to West Side Story gets me every time. Thank you for your book reports and film reviews Happy New Year to all.

    1. Thanks Claudia, I have seen one or two documentaries about Leonard Bernstein, not sure if I saw that one. You said it better than I did. The movie skipped over the depth and brilliance of this man and subjected us instead to a marital drama and focused on his wife as a miserable victim of a monster. That might or might not be justified, but missing the depth is just right. Thanks for the message. For better or worse (and there is, of course, worse) there has never been anyone like him in the world of musical culture. He deserved better in my view.
