In Our Barn Attic, A Precious Find For Our New Upstairs Bathroom And Toilet. One Way Or Another, It’s Coming Inside

by Jon Katz

This morning, Maria, the only one who has explored the big barn’s upstairs hay storage room, said she vaguely remembered seeing an ancient door buried among old stuff that might be a former outhouse door. This is a timely discovery. We have a power and waterless compost toilet we are putting upstairs in the corner of the bedroom and are looking for a door for the small enclosure we are having Dan Rogers build in the coming week.

We both lit up at the same time. This afternoon, Maria climbed up into the barn’s cluttered attic and came down with this fantastic find – this seems clearly to have been the door on an hour a long time ago. There is both decoration and ventilation, two signs. Maria measured me, and she said it was too low, and we had to find a way to raise the door length. I texted a photo to Dan, who said he thought it would be no problem; he could work around it by adding wood to the bottom of the door.

We both love the old door, but we have to make it work; there is no more fitting door for our compost toilet corner than this door. I told Maria if we couldn’t make it fit around the compost toilet, we should bring it into the house and hang it on a wall. It is precious and rare.

  1. Aaaannnndddd. If it won’t hang as a door- how about turning it sideways and using it as a headboard?! Minus the knob…which you can use somewhere else ;)…best of luck!!! Nice find!!!!!

    1. We can make it hang by a door, otherwise it’s going on a wall, but Dan is confident he can make it work around the new toilet..

    1. Thanks Judy, we would never throw it out, if it can’t work in our new little bathroom we’ll hang it on the wall in our living room..
