Farm Journal: Come With Me And Zip To See The Sunrise At Bedlam Farm. I Used To Do This By Myself. Now I Have Company

by Jon Katz

I love to rush outside in various weather to catch the sun rising. I always did this alone, but now I do it with Zip. When I rush out to see the rising sun, Zip waits for me in the chairs or by St. Joseph’s statue. I like being out there alone, but I’m enjoying Zip’s company. He follows me around whenever I step outside. I never see him coming, and I never see him go. He’s just there, waiting for a head scratch.

He seems to know when I am coming and where I am going. I’m getting used to it. We chat a  bit, and I scratch his head a bit, and then he’s off on his rounds, and I am off on mine. It’s a new experience for me, and I like it. It was a quiet morning, suitable for writing. This afternoon, I went to the pulmonologist to go over my sleep related to my heart and sleep apnea. I see him twice yearly; he is not the only male doctor I see. Then I’ve got some food shopping. Tomorrow, Maria and I will see Killers Of The Flower Moon, the new film by Martin Scorcese. It’s three and a half hours long, but it might be worth it if the reviews are any good.

I might write about it myself.

Zip lives to rub his head against the blue chair when I get close.

This is a new perspective on the sunrise for me. I find it beautiful; it reminds me of a George Inness landscape.

The apple tree is Zip’s daylight headquarters. It’s a blessing to share the run with him.

  1. Great pictures and sunrise. Love the pictures of Zip, he’s so cute and is a lucky boy to be living with you and Maria on your beautiful Peaceful Kingdom. Happy Friday!!

  2. I had a cat who was my constant companion in the garden. I called him the supervisor. He was a black and white beauty. These special cats teach us to communicate with nature. He also took walks with me. Cherish Zip.

  3. Robbie Robertson worked on that film with Scorsese. I’m looking forward to it, then I’m not. It’s such an awful reminder of how we treated the native Americans.

  4. Oh, please do comment on the movie! I saw it recently, and can’t wait to hear what you and Maria think of it.

      1. Tux kitty’s have a different personality than other kitties. My tux kitty is a always in the same room as us and always ready for a head scratch. I’ve had a calico and a persian but our Lucy is my first tux and she rules and has trained us better than the two previous cats I’ve been blessed to have. Their quiet wishing to be near and eager to visit is a wonderful treat !!

  5. Interested in hearing about the movie. I just received the book, but am in the middle of another so won’t be able to begin reading it for a few days.
