The IPhone 15 Pro Max Is Here: Check Out The First Photos, Zip And The Garden Beds. I See A Significant Difference. Hail, Photography

by Jon Katz

This was a big day photo-wise; my new Iphone 15 Pro Max came with some promised additions to the camera. I bought it from Apple directly and will get some money for trading it in. I purchased the new phone because it will significantly improve the color and detail of the photos I like to take, flowers and other things.

The new phone Pro Max has a higher resolution: The phone has a 48-megapixel primary camera, which is a significant upgrade in resolution compared to the previous. Telephoto: Having a telephoto lens is one thing, but I’ll also upgrade to a 3× or 5× optical zoom. That’s a lot of new reach for my Iphone 13.

My Leica doesn’t have a zoom; this will be a natural addition. I see a real difference in the detail and color between my previous and current iPhones. See what you think; feel free to comment on my blog or Facebook Page. I see a marked difference in depth of field as well. I wandered around the yard a bit and will explore the camera more over the next few days. I’m still setting it up and figuring out how it works.

This was my first sighting of Zip in my garden bed. He slept underneath it, but this was his first appearance; he came while I took photos of flowers. He wanted to hang around with me, as he often does.

Bee has lunch with Dahlia.

Zip posing in my Garden Bed; he is quite at home there.

The color is vibrant with this Iphone. It’s the pixels.

I have a new thing I do: afternoon prayer and meditation with St. Joseph. The blue sky knows when it’s time.

These twists and turns remind me of paintings I saw in the New York Museum of Modern Art when I was last there.

Zip was right at home in my gardens; he managed to stay close to me whenever I got outside. He’s a good companion.

Some of my first photos with the new phone have to be with Zinnia, Fate, and Bud. They are my companions and inspiration.

This was an Iphone 15 Max Pro color test. It passed.

The softness of the color struck me right away. See if you can see a difference.

      1. Great photos! I ordered my Pro Max about 2 weeks ago, and of course ordered the white, so will have to wait awhile more ‘til they get them shipped.
        Excited!!

  3. John, I just got an iPhone 15 pro (not max) because I love to take pictures and wasn’t satisfied with my iPhone 11 camera. BUT I’m baffled! I don’t know how to use this beautiful new tool. Would you consider sharing your knowledge? I think I have a pretty good eye for texture and contrast, color and light but I want to refine my use of this tool. Can you help? A zoom class perhaps? 😁

    1. Deb, I’m not good at tech support and would be overwhelmed by it if I tried..I’d suggest calling Apple, they will work through the phone with you..I hired someone to do it with me, and I’ only beginning to understand it..

  4. Questions:
Does the phone switch between close up and one of the other 2 lenses when trying for a close up of something small? Don’t know if this is explaining it but my #14 suffers from that. Cannot make the focus stick in those cases. It’s a known issue. Do you have it on the 15?

Do you feel a significant difference in weight versus your #13?

Have you tried using it on Raw to make maximum use of the pixels? It should be apparent in your Lightroom or Photoshop.

How does it perform in low light?

Curious to hear your experience because I am NOT happy with my #14….

    1. Nicky I’m not good at tech support, I barely understand the process myself..I’d call Apple and someone will help you.

      1. Will do, sorry for torpedoing these things at you… 🙂 I will actually make an appointment at the Genus bar around here to see if they can tell me more…

    2. I just received my 15 pro max and was blown away by the low light performance. Looking out at a relatively dark street scene, it was difficult to see any detail or the several houses on the street. When I took a picture of the street it was amazing how much detail I could see on all the homes. Almost like sunset instead of total darkness. Tried the zoom once and couldn’t believe how much it enlarged the boat in the ocean.

  5. I have enjoyed your past photos too theses are much sharper to my old eyes.
    I loved the Zip photos.
Surprisingly, you still have many lovely flowers mid September. Zip looks great among. them. Delighted that you have a good feline friend Zip. He’s more than just a barn cat.
These photos made me happy as I deal with the difficult in my life.

  6. Huge difference! The colors are so vibrant and I love the detail! I too got a new phone this week- iPhone 15 Pro ( didn’t get the max). The pictures of my Golden Retriever are so sharp and clear. I can see every whisker on her face! Huge change for me as I had an iPhone 8 😂

  7. Your skill at photography has been deepened with this new device! Zip’s eyes reflect the brilliance of his inner self; the colors of the flowers and gardens and sky are gorgeous; Zinnia and Bud and Fate have never looked so good. Your purchase of this iPhone was a wise one, indeed! Thanks for bringing a little bit of beautiful Bedlam Farm to us.

    1. Thanks Kaaren, I’m working hard to get better and capture the soul of things..your message of support is very important to me, and thanks…This is hard work, but rewarding..

    1. Go for it Ross, we are all outstanding in our own way. The photos are different without question but that doesn’t mean you need to like them or give up your Sony. If it works for you then its good.

  8. Jon Katz’s blog on the iPhone 15 Pro Max is truly impressive, offering a firsthand account of the enhanced camera features and their impact on photography. The detailed explanation of the higher resolution and optical zoom upgrade provides valuable insights for photography enthusiasts. The vibrant color reproduction is clearly showcased through the stunning images of flowers. This blog is an informative guide for anyone interested in the new iPhone’s capabilities, and Jon’s commitment to exploring and sharing his experiences adds a personal touch.
