Maria’s Sketch: Portrait Of Us In The Living Room.

by Jon Katz

Maria doesn’t consider her sketches a big deal, but I think they are quite wonderful; they reflect our love and lives together in a way only artists can do.

Two living room chairs inspired the sketch; she was sitting on one of them, the wicker on the left.

We don’t own a TV, but we love watching British mysteries on my Iphone.  We see fine.

To do this, we make some popcorn and pulled the two seats together. We have come to love streaming and reading next to one another in these chairs. British mysteries are the only things we watch, and only for an hour a day.

For the first few weeks after my accident, this was a necessity; I was sleeping in a soft chair as well as reading and watching mysteries.

Maria saw this as a portrait of us, a space that is so important for us and healthy. It’s a place of love and quiet and connection. It is a portrait of us.

We put aside the chores and chores of the day and leave the outer world behind. We hold hands, and I love to rub her feet, which get tired after running around so much and standing up all day. This often pulls her to sleep.

These are cozy and peaceful times for us; they mean a great deal. We started streaming during the pandemic. It’s become something special to each of us, a ritual of connection.

Sometimes, we both end up asleep in our chairs. Maria is right; it is a portrait of us and our comfort and trust in one another. The popcorn helps, too.
