Magic: See How Your Fabric Donations Become Stylish Art In Sue’s Senior Classes At Bishop Gibbons High School. Thanks!

by Jon Katz

I think of Sue as a medieval magician now, magically transforming your generous donations of fabric, wood, and paint into beautiful art for the students to take home and grace their homes and families.  She is either a saint-to-be or a good witch in action.

Today, the 11th and 12th grades took your fabric contributions and made printing fabric and wood into building sculptures. Your donations of recycled and abandoned and forgotten materials – clothes, wood, appliances, hats, jewelry, toys, etc. are the engine for one of the most ambitious and successful art programs in any school anywhere.

Sue has eight different stations in her art classroom in the school basement; the students get to choose their assignments and interpretations. If you have any old or used things, please consider sending them to Sue; she and her students will turn them into art, a test of imagination, and a building of self-esteem and confidence. There is almost nothing that is clean and intact that she will not turn into art. And thanks. You can see how it is used. I’ll keep the photos coming.

You can send your donations to Sue Silverstein, Bishop Gibbons High School, 2600 Albany Street, Schenectady, N.Y.,12304

Pressing the print into fabric.

Making building structures with donated wood blocks and boards. Donations to Sue Silverstein, Bishop Gibbons High School, Schenectady, N.Y. 12304. Soon I’ll get to meet her new class of refugee students, all waiting for their education to help bring them to college.

  1. Is there someplace that Sue likes to shop for things? I have already sent old things but would like to support her program more. Have contributed to lists, but is there something else?

    1. No particular place, I just bought one used calculator on Amazon, I see there are others online, on EBay and electronic stories. She has no preference, she’s asking for 15, but if she gets more she will use them immediately…thanks Joan, for your support.

      1. Yes people can but Sue is buried in work and brutal hours people can send her the calculator if they wish, getting requests for her is what we do.
