Three or four times a year, someone shows up and is admitted to the Mansion, and for various reasons, brought nothing with them but the clothes they are wearing. Often, they come directly from their homes and never get to go back and get their clothes.
I usually get a call from one of the ladies asking for help getting new clothes and other necessities.
I have a quick response network of thrift stores and consignment for emergencies like this. I got the call yesterday. “C” needs everything.
I wanted to get the clothes to her right away. I can’t get it out of my head when I get a call like that. I think of” C” (not her real initial) without fresh clothes.
Kayla, who operates Caroll’s Corner Consignment Store in my town, is my favorite place and person to call. She comes through immediately and understands my sense of urgency. The clothes were of excellent quality, clean and with soft and nice colors.
They look new.
She’s a dream to work with, and she is also empathetic. I called her around noon and told her what I needed, and by the time I got to her shop, she had the clothes all sorted out and there for me to go over and take to the Mansion – three shirts, six pairs of socks, two oversized jeans, and underwear is on the way from Amazon.
Kayla’s stuff all looks fresh.
I insist on only buying brand-new underclothes. These are nice clothes, and Kayla insists on giving me a discount – her prices are already pretty low. I got all of this for 88 dollars.
I got the text for help at noon. “C” had the clothes by 2 p.m. Thanks to the Army Of Good for helping me to do this. Your donations make it possible and this is the kind of work we do all the time that doesn’t get much attention – my bad.
If you wish to donate to the Mansion Fund, which is always low, you can do so via Paypal, [email protected], or Venmo, Jon Katz@Jon-Katz-13 or by check, Jon Katz, Mansion Fund, P.O. Box 205, Cambridge, N.Y, 12816. And thanks. We do a lot of good.
