“When you ask the Army Of Good to love kids, this happens!” Sue Silverstein told me this afternoon after receiving the first load of healthy breakfast snacks for the needy students at Bishop Gibbons who sometimes need a healthy breakfast or energy snack.
She wanted me to thank you all as the first wave of donations arrived at the school (above); she sent this message:
“Every time I think I can’t be more amazed by the outpouring of love for the students here, and the kind generosity of people, I am stunned once again. God bless everyone who donated wholesome snacks for hungry kids. Sometimes kids forget lunch or can’t d peanut butter due to allergies. The tuna cans sent are a lovely and healthy alternative for kids who can’t do nuts. As are foods like dried fruit packages. The folks in your group s are just so loving and kind.”
She wanted to mention some people who sent a “ton” of food, especially Linda from Virginia, Marilyn, Carolyn, and “my special love,” Florence.
Sue has been feeding these healthy breakfasts to her students for years.
Refugee children, in particular, often need support, as do many others.
Sometimes their parents are gone out working two or three jobs, sometimes they run out of money and can only afford dinner, sometimes the kids are freezing from walking to school in the bitter cold without the right clothes, sometimes they aren’t eating well at home and need some healthy things to get them started for the school day.
Sue’s students need a lot of energy; they don’t just hang around.
Children come early to Sue’s classroom if they need breakfast support, where it is waiting for them with healthy snacks. She can also use more help – peanut butter, jelly, dried fruit, protein bars, tuna, soup, and noodles – anything that isn’t perishable, healthy, and nutritious.
Not everyone at Bishop Gibbins is poor, but some students need this help all during the school year. If you wish to continue sending food support, the address is Sue Silverstein, Bishop Gibbons High School, 2600 Albany Road, Schenectady, New York, 12304. And thank you, there are all kinds of people out there eager to do good, given the chance.
I am proud to be a part of this.
Sue is right. I’m not sure anyone loves kids more than she does, but the Army Of Good has always come through for children, bless and thank you all for that.
