Long Tongues And Faces: Three Working Dogs Need A Workout, And Got One Today

by Jon Katz

I’ve got three working dogs, and we make it a point to exercise them every day in one way or another. My MO is to run them or chase balls until I see the longue tongues and stop. Zinnia is panting next to me and gulping water down. Fate is in Maria’s study; her tongue hangs off the ground.

Fate and Zinnia roam the pasture and run there, and they love chasing the ball in the North pasture. I love throwing it for them. I do it until I see them wearing out.

Fate runs like a rabbit; Zinnia is heavier but focused. She never loses the ball; Fate often overruns it. Both of them will sleep tonight.

Bud’s tongue is too short to hang down; he doesn’t chase the ball (his mouth is too small) but chases moles, rabbits, and mice everywhere and gets worn easily. Boston Terriers can overheat quickly, so we don’t let him go for too long. If he catches anything, we’ll smell it right away.

  1. Hi Jon, This is go good! I love when dogs get this kind of work out. They need it! I always worry my dog does not get enough of running around……..I walk with her an hour a day, but is that enough? , I always ask myself do dogs need more, like the work out you provide yours. I always wanted to ask you. Do you have an answer?

    1. Dogs differ Donna, the working dogs need between 45 minutes and an hour of intense moving walking or running every day. THey don’t need more than that, despite what dog owners often think…small dogs need activity but rarely need more intense activity, as border collies, Labs, Shepherds and large mixed breeds do.. You can tell by weight…dogs with the right exercise don’t gain weight./
