A Symbol: Sacrifice And The Essential Goodness Of Life

by Jon Katz

I found these flowers in my garden bed this morning, a sign of the essential goodness of life.

For much of my life, I’ve sacrificed my own opinions, my own desires, my own interests, and my own personal goals to meet the needs and ideas of others. Ultimately, I know now that I sacrificed the self for the brass rings of a social system that worships money, power, and nothing else.

I want more. I’ve begun the challenge of rethinking everything I thought success and meaning was about. It’s not too late. Seeing these beautiful flowers opening up in my garden this morning, I resolved to keep on developing a genuine spiritual life. That’s the message I got today.

  1. I love how your photos of the Lisianthus show sometimes nearly perfect ones, like these, and sometimes ones that are beat up by age or storms. They are all beautiful! Delicate, and hardy.

  2. I think you began your journey of rethinking everything and *growing into your true self* many years ago, Jon…….. you are still on the road……as are most of us! And I must say….the header photo of this post…that beautiful lavender lisanthus, just about took my breath away. It is soft……yet so *full*. Can’t think of a better descriptive….it’s lovely
