Photo Journal, Monday, July 31, 2023: Food Poisoning Took The Morning: The Afternoon Is mine

by Jon Katz

The skies are wild here, sunny one minute, full of menace the next. I’ve got some time to watch. I had a wicked case of food poisoning. I was up all night, slept all morning, and just woke up now. I went out to take a few photos, and I’m devoting the rest of the afternoon and evening to resting and reading, and taking a few pictures:

I just got Richard Russo’s new novel Somebody’s Fool and am deep into Colson Whitehead’s Crook Manifesto. I so some spiritual reading daily, so Henri Nouwen’s Here And Now is by my chair. Colson Whitehead first, I’m into it and loving it.

The donkeys are always there when I point the Camera West.

Maria walked the dogs into the woods yesterday; it was hot. She gave each of them a cool shower and then had one for herself.

I’m still rocky – I can’t eat or walk around much. But it’s a  lot better than last night.

  1. Sorry you don’t feel well. Food poisoning is pretty aweful.

I see Richard Russo’s Somebody’s Fool is on your reading list and he’s one of my favorite writers. I’m going to hear him talk about the book on Wednesday in South Hadley and …. even better! … a copy of the book comes with the ticket!

  2. Not a mystery but I’m reading Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Belt. It’s so different and well written and the main protagonist is an octopus!
