For the past two years, the Army Of Good has been helping the Mansion residents get to the Washington County Fair. We help get tickets, buy refreshments and lunch, and pay for transportation, souvenirs, ice cream, games of chance and rides in the Fair’s carnival section.
The county fair is the big deal of the year around here, a popular showcase for cattle, the young farmers in 4-H, and all kinds of farm supplies and tractors.
The tractor pull is one of the most popular events of the year here; people also show their bulls, horses, cows, calves, and chickens. Many residents have children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren showing animals at the Fair.
They would love to see them compete.
The residents look forward to this all year, but few have the money to get there, eat, and go on rides. Last year, the Fair donated some tickets to the Mansion.
Transportation is complex – many residents are on walkers, use canes, or need wheelchairs to get around. The aides come along to help. The Fair is in August, the last celebration before school starts and the weather changes.
In the past, we funded boat rides at Lake George in the Fall, but I’m respecting people’s stress and asking for less this year.

Please help the Mansion residents get there. I will collect the donations and give what is needed directly to the Activity Staff. Any overage will go to the residents’ clothing, toiletries, and art supplies.
You can donate via Paypal, [email protected], or Venmo, Jon-Katz@Jon-Katz-13. Or by check – Jon Katz, Mansion County Fair Fund, P.O. Box 205, State Route 22, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816.
It means a great deal to the residents to get to the fair and be able to eat and go on the rides. Many of them try to win toy bears and dolls at the carnival. Most of them do, thanks to the people who run the games. I’m hoping to go and take some photos.
I know things are tighter than in past years, but I hope you can help and that we can give them a great time.
