“Good morning, thought you might enjoy this picture of my raven. A friend of mine named him Brian but it’s probably a female, ha ha. I walk my dog in a quiet neighborhood here in San Francisco and this raven recognizes me immediately because I have dog treats in my pocket and he loves them. This Raven and I have been friends through three dogs, two labs, and now a little poodle mix. I always consider it quite an honor when he comes and joins me on my morning dog walks.” – Susan Reichert Wong.
I love this message from Susie Wong, a long-time blog reader. I also got a dozen others from Raven lovers nationwide who have befriended Ravens, who get close to them and are seen as pets and companions. The Ravens don’t great into houses but drop by to visit when there are treats or just visits. The ravens seem dog savvy and know which ones are safe.
Almost everyone e-mailing me says the same thing: Maria is the perfect person to befriend a raven; they would know just from sight if she is friendly. We talked about it this morning, and she is excited about trying. I doubt she could connect with the ravens hanging out in the maple tree outside our bedroom window. We are already talking to them.
“Ravens (and crows) will form attachments to humans who share where they live.
If this happens at Bedlam, Maria will certainly be the one to bring it about.
I hope this pair have made your farm their home. Their energy is so unique you’ll begin to tune into it as if they were part of your whole animal family. So special…” Suzanne

Thanks, Suzanne; these two ravens do leave here; we will give it a shot.
I also got a suggestion from a reader that I buy a book called Mind Of A Raven by Bernd Heinrich, a professor of biology at the University of Vermont. I took her advice and got it.
It’s heavy on academic speak and style but mesmerizing. He details how he saw Ravens (he raised four or five of them from birth) perform tasks and sense things “beyond imagination.”
I’m excited about making the Raven the symbol of the farm; I heard one of our ravens up in the apple tree above the iron raven I put there yesterday. Perhaps this is a sign to him that we are okay. This will be fun. I have a good feel about it.
I think it’s more Maria’s than mine, but I will try to help.
I have a bluebird who comes when I call her… well, it could be the mealworms I put out for her and her family… but if I don’t have any she lets me know about that, too!
Walking out dogs last night, crossed paths with a couple that had a pigeon walking along with them. Said the bird had followed them from a local duck pond and was heading home with them….new friend!
The raven is the longtime logo of the Gunsite Training Academy in Paulden, AZ. https://www.gunsite.com
I’m as excited about this as if I lived there.
If the contact develops and progresses, please share.
I will share, promise…
