The Meaning Of Flowers. Are They Helping To Discover My Own Beauty?

by Jon Katz

I think flowers and photography have been a pathway to discovering your own beauty ” – Joy.

Joy’s message struck an immediate and deep chord in me. I think her message is profound and also powerful, and accurate. Flowers have been a pathway to discovering something deep in me, natural, beautiful, and essential.

It is one of the most powerful experiences of my life. The flowers are about so much more than themselves. They are about everyone they touch.

Like most people in our country, beauty is often defined by narrowly defined “looks.” How thin are we, how young, how fit, what color are our eyes, how rich is our hair, even our skin?

Of course, there is something beautiful in all of us, but I had a lot of trouble finding the beauty inside of me.

I think my photography began my search for it. Then Maria, who saw beauty in me that no one else in my life saw. And now, after some years of searching, my camera and flowers have given me a key that unlocks the hidden part of me where beauty has been hidden for so long.

Joy nailed it; looking through the camera lens and at my pictures, I felt my heart open and turn soft and with beautiful colors. My anger melts away, as does my fear.

The more photos I take of flowers, the more beauty I can feel coming up from inside of me. I never knew it was there. Now, it is coming out into the open for others to see.

Hi, Jon, Given the evocative photos you’ve been posting of your flowers, I thought this card appropriate. Each flower has its own personality and sometimes something different in each of us.” – Kathy Kelly, Concord, Mass.

Kathy also touched on something important. Flowers are like people; each has its personality and fingerprint, we leave our mark on the world, and each spot differs from all others.

I am learning that flowers are essential to humans and human life. FLowres are nature’s way of showing love and beauty to us; we often forget both, which is the scrum of daily life.

I’m grateful for these messages (and thanks, Kathy, for donating to my blog). There is a lot of truth to them.

Flowers are helping to open up the locks and walk inside of me and around my fouls. They are doing the same to others, judging from the messages I receive.

It feels like a rebirth, even a resurrection. I’m learning that the flowers are in charge of this process; they are leading me, and I am not teaching them. They are, each one of them, spirits, and they have gotten inside of me and are moving things around.

Perhaps this is the hallmark of a new kind of revolution – love and beauty wanting to be heard and seen again.

  1. Two words stood out to me in this post – “flowers” and “revolution”. It reminded me of the late sixties when the term, “flower power” was coined. It was a revolution of peace and love. We became flower children. We were going to stop hate and wars. So what the heck happened???

  2. your thoughts remind me of a book my mother had in the 60’s about Findhorn in Scotland I think? or some part of UK. the flower spirits and dieties came to life there and were acknowledged and gave information…the plants were amazing and HUGE and communicated. I will have to look it up again…it was around the time Donna mentioned…flower power for sure. I remember the woman who first ‘communicated’ with the flowers was named Eileen I think. I was young at the time and will have to research it a bit. thanks for the memories. and for the awakening in yourself and others. a great realization!
