Sunday Morning. Getting Chickens To Come, (Maybe They Can Teach Fate), Saying Goodbye To The Fish Tank

by Jon Katz

We were closing the pasture gate yesterday (rotational grazing) and noticed that the Imperious Hens were on the other end, far from the entrance.

If we closed it, they might be trapped out there, as happened once. That could be pretty dangerous for chickens up here.

Maria just called out to them and made a chicken noise, and all three came running across the pasture to the gate.

Mission accomplished. That was a surprise to me.  I wish Fate could do that.

Somebody posted on my blog that Maria is a force of nature. I agree.

Today, we emptied the fish tank. Like dogs, they marked the passage of time for us. We’re in a different time. That’s the wheel of life.

Our last fish died last night – we have been letting them go at their own pace and not replacing them. We got the tank when Gus, our first small dog, a Boston Terrier, died a few years ago, and a month or two ago, the tank was struck with some disease we couldn’t identify.

We tried to save it but couldn’t, so we decided to let the tank die out.

We emptied it and took it up to the attic. I doubt we will use it again. It was time. I have the feeling we are in for a living room re-organization.

I was deeply into tropical fish when I was young; I created an alternate universe, something could do all by myself, my kingdom.

I didn’t go back to tropical fish until Gus died, and we enjoyed them. I loved to watch them while meditating. But it’s time to move on.

Thanks, fish; once again, you were there when  I needed you.
