In The Garden: Onions, Barn Windows, I’m Trying To Rest And Be A Good Boy: I’m Failing

by Jon Katz

Maria began my love of flowers; we worked together to plant her gardens. When I realized I was having trouble kneeling on the ground, I knew I had the bug, and my garden beds and the flowers that grew in them took me over the edge.

This week, I’m planting new flowers and dropping in some seeds and beds.

Maria is planting vegetables for her vegetable garden; we searched for vegetable plants this morning and found some, including some onions.

I got some rest today, just not at night when I’m supposed to be resting.

I’ve been told to take it easy this weekend, and I am trying.  I’m not even sure what that means, I can’t lie around for hours and hours on a day like this, or even when it rains.

There is a fair amount of intermittent pain and many trips to the bathroom. I am on the mend, though, and I am moving ahead after many days of trying to rest. I’m just not good at it.

I do seem to be good at planting garden beds.

With my toe gone, I’m already walking much better, and I don’t even have my new brace yet.

My garden beds are coming to life. I’m entirely hooked on flowers and gardens, something I never wanted to go near for most of my life. Go figure. On my afternoon walk-a-round, I was drawn to this barn window photo.

In an actual barn, there is junk everywhere.

A hanging flower pant. A new arrival. I’m loving this one already.

  1. I love the picture of Maria planting. Do you think she would mind i I used it as background on my computer? I would never use it without asking. Thank, Jon.

    1. Patsy, I don’t bookmark or copyright my photos; you are free to use them in any way you wish, and thanks for wanting to…Maria has no objections either..I see them as a thank you to my readers…

  2. Our barn has vary little junk in it, mostly because it is over 100 years old and deserves respect. And also, we keep animals there. Your raised beds are handsome and help to keep the bunnies away . I planted in mine for years until I
had trouble standing and they served us well, lots of flowers and veggies.
What are you planting in yours? And why did you have a toe removed?
