Recovery Journal: At Bedlam Farm, No One Heals Alone

by Jon Katz

I’m under extremely struck instructions to rest over the next few days, and since I can’t sleep at night, I’m taking short naps throughout the day in between work. Here, nobody sleeps or heals alone. Bud takes the lead position in my lap, Zinnia lies down next to him, and Fate sleeps in the back in her own distinctive way.

Every time I fall asleep, I wake up to true Dog Support. They know, of course, they know.

  1. Jon, it just occurred to me that you and Minnie now have something in common. I know you felt ambivalent about amputating her leg at the time but she’s been doing well all these years enjoying life on your farm. I know a leg can’t compare to a big toe, but still … I suspect the strangeness of losing your toe will eventually lead to normalcy. Limbs are precious but being able to live your life is even more so. I wish you continued good luck with your recovery. It looks like you’re doing great!

    1. Thanks, Barbara; Minnie and I have a lot in common. I don’t see that as one of them, but I’ll think about it. I am very reluctant to compare my experiences to animals, but it is an interesting idea.
