Photo Journal, Saturday April 9, 2023. Meet My New Camera, A Mirrorless Leica Sl2-S. A Mind-Blower

by Jon Katz

Say hello to my new Leica camera, a mirrorless SL2-S.

It is a game changer for me; it takes all kinds of lenses and will alter how I take pictures and how they look. I have a lot to learn, but that’s the point. I’ve gotten to work already. Come and see the first photos I’ve taken with the camera. Over time, I’ll buy some new lenses. I had to sacrifice my sweet Monochrome in trade for it.

I’m very excited to have it. It captures the sky brilliantly and has excellent detail and depth of field. This is one of the first Leica’s that works with anybody’s lenses, which are much cheaper than theirs. This camera is built like a small tank, heavy and weatherproof.  Leica doesn’t believe in labeling buttons; they believe you should learn as you go. Easy for them to say, but good for me over the long haul.

  1. I love how your new camera captures the rich detail and colors of what you photographed. I almost felt like I had donned a new pair of strong reading glasses. This is going to be a fun ride.

  2. Soft and calm are what came to me as I looked at these beautiful photos. They look like paintings in some ways.
You just keep finding more ways to capture the beauty around us, Jon !
I am looking forward to what else you discover.

  3. The new camera provides excellent detail! I love the cow pasture, the colors are so vivid! You’re going to have a lot of fun playing with your new camera!

    1. Catharine, the tool is called a shedding blade. I used one on one of my dogs that seemed to shed constantly. I’m guessing that Maria is brushing the donkeys and helping them shed their winter coats.

  4. Wow! These photos are wonderful; enjoy the journey ahead as you explore what you can do with your new camera. Thanks for sharing.

  5. Enjoy your photography, they have the quality of visual meditations. But I know nothing about cameras, however, these photos made me sit up and take notice. Something new was in the air. I understand good optics as I have a pair of Swarovski binoculars as I’m an avid birder. Swarovski are top of the line but Leica binocs even more so. I knew your Leica would be good.
Enjoy your Leica and with spring migration underway I will be doing the same with my Swarovskis.

  6. Mirrorless is different. I got a Nikon Z9 in the fall, works with my existing Nikon lenses. A learning curve from my D850 DSLR, which is good as you say. Nice to be learning. Love the live histogram, and improved autofocus. Good luck with the new camera!
