A Need For Brushes: Something The Mansion And Bishop Gibbons Have In Common. On The Way

by Jon Katz

My work at the Mansion and my work at Bishop Gibbons are very different, but both have one thing in common. The residents and the students are painting constantly and in great numbers. And both places are continuously in great need of paint and brushes.

It was jolting to see how many are just worn out.

It is one activity everyone seems to love. I sent four packages of brushes off to the Mansion and Sue Silverstein today; both say they are both in need of more..

They showed me the brushes above at the Mansion; they are rock-hard and beat up.

I sent some flat brushes for painting on wood and four different packages of acrylic brushes to Sue Silverstein (some foam brushes for wood also.) Sue told me Friday paint is the one thing that keeps running out of fun. More is on the way.

They are in good shape for a few weeks, but they will be back.

If you have any old brushes in good condition, please send some to Sue Silverstein, Bishop Gibbons High School, Schenectady, N.Y., 12304, or to Alyne Mayer, The Mansion, 11 S. Union Avenue, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816.

I’ll keep sending paints and brushes as long as the money lasts out.

I had several hundred dollars on hand in donations, and this was a great place to use it. Nothing gives the art class kids or the Mansion residents more pleasure than painting.

Both will all paint on anything, especially wood, canvas, and anything that will stand still..

You can also send a paintbrush and paint donation to me, Jon Katz, via Paypal,[email protected], or Venmo, Jon-Katz@Jon-Katz-13 Venmon. Or a check to Jon Katz, Mansion/Refugee Fund, P.O. Box 205, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816. I’ll see that it gets there.

  1. A high quality brush is almost impossible to wear out, IF you clean it properly.
A drop of hair conditioner every few cleanings works wonders too.
    That’s 35 yrs experience talking.

    1. Conditions at the Mansion with extreme elderly care are not that simple Steve, that’s six years of experience responding. If it were that simple for them it would be done.
