Spring, Trees, Clouds. The World Opens Up Again

by Jon Katz

I walk outside and take a picture when I’m not feeling well. Then I feel better.

Thomas Merton first turned me on to trees and the wonder in learning from them. Then Maria. Then, our walks in the woods with the dogs.

A tree gives glory to God by being a tree,” wrote Merton.

For being what God means it to be, it is obeying God. It “consents,” so to speak, to God’s creative love. It expresses an idea which is in God and which is not distinct from the essence of God, and therefore a tree imitates God by being a tree.”

  1. As always beautiful captures from you! In upper right hand corner, looks like the hand of God! Trees, and clouds are some of my favs. Thanks for sharing with us. You brighten my day.

  2. Angela I can see God’s hand also, but then that same cloud opened up to become swan protecting her nest.

    1. Yes! I can see that. I love clouds, fond observer for years. They express themselves to us and at times I feel it can be a message. I feel the same about the sky and trees. I always wished trees could tell us their stories. However, the trees do show us they are still standing tall when they are stripped of their foliage, they dress up brightly for us, they are houses and safety for some animals and after being pelted by the elements, they are still standing. Ah, so much to be grateful for.

  3. FYI, there is a new book out called “the Forgotten Merton”. It’s about Thomas’s younger brother. I’m planning on getting a copy!
