Yesterday, I asked for help naming the two Canada Geese who visit us every Spring to nest in our pond in the back and give birth to at least one gosling. These are tough and hardy creatures; they guard their nest fiercely. The dogs have learned to keep their distance.
Julie, a blog reader, suggested “Fred” and “Ethel” from the old “I Love Lucy” TV show.
Before that, Barbara suggested “Ralph” and “Alice” from the “Honeymooners.” We were torn, but Maria and I chose “Fred” and “Ethel.” It had the right ring to it.
Thanks to the many good people who e-mailed me and posted suggestions online. There were a lot of good ones. It was hard to choose. It’ ‘s great to give names to this couple finally; they come to the farm every year to have their offspring, and they are one of the hallmarks of Spring.
We love hearing them talk to one another and to the geese who fly overhead.
