The Bedlam Farm Geese Are Back. Naming Ideas Are Welcome

by Jon Katz

Our resident geese are back, a dame and a gander who come to nest and have a gosling every Spring. Fate ignores them, Zinnia chases after them (they fly in a circle and come back), and the egg hatches sometime in May or early June.

We enjoy having them here; they take off and vanish for another year once their offspring are born – there’s usually just one.

If you can help name them, I’d welcome any ideas. Feel free to email me suggestions – at [email protected] – or post it on the blog comments.

We love having them here, Zinnia loves to chase them, and they get very protective of the next one once the egg is in there. I’m not worried about Zinnia, she won’t push it, and Fate could care less. If she gets close, she’ll each of them a kiss.

Their honking in the morning adds another sweet element to life on the farm.

  1. How about The Honeymooners – Ralph and Alice? He’d be all full of bluster and she’d calmly put him in his place. For all the pecking and qvetching they did, you knew they loved each other and would stay together. Geese are loud and mate for life so …

  2. Just love the ebb and flow of the seasons and what stays, what disappears and what returns. Like old friends.

  3. We have Canadian geese where I work, they’re a noisy bunch! Always yelling at everything with lots of posturing. I can tell which are the males as they are always standing guard while their mate is busy eating. I have no idea how dormant grass can nourish them. Our biggest issue is their poop all over the sidewalk we use to get into work. When I was little I learned that domestic geese bite if you piss them off, so I steer clear of them on my way into the building.

  4. Fred and Ethel (I Love Lucy). I know it’s not always PC these days – the old shows… etc… but that is what popped into my mind looking at this picture. BTW – first time commenting / connecting with you. I am constantly amazing by your braveness to be vulnerable. Kudos! Namaste! Merci!

    1. Thanks Julie..admitting vulnerability is the mark of a real man to me…and thanks for the name..we are going to use it!
