My Thing With Spiders, A New Necklace

by Jon Katz

I just got a spider necklace this week, which I wear daily; I’ve learned to stop killing spiders and admire them for their industry, savvy, creativity, and faith in their webs.

I want to live alongside them instead of killing them, which I used to do without thought.

I identify with them in some odd way. They do little harm and a lot of good. I don’t want to kill things just because I can.

Spider, weaving webs of delight

weave me a peaceful world,

carry creation in your web

waiting to be unfurled…

Poem, unknown

  1. A haiku from Kobayashi Issa summarizes my attitude toward spiders and cleaning.
    Don’t worry spiders
    I keep house
    casually.
