Visiting With Liam. He Loves Some Vegetables And A Few Grains

by Jon Katz

Maria brought Liam some grain and vegetables, which he eats very slowly. I wanted to come.

He isn’t eating much hay anymore and stays away from the feeders. It seemed to me he was having trouble seeing, but he was happy to see a handful of grain.

He moves very slowly and makes eye contact with me for a long while. I made sure to thank him for the good years he has given us, and I see that he is comfortable if fading visibly.

He always did like being photographed; he never gave me a hard time about it. He didn’t today, either.

I don’t think he has too much longer to live, but he does seem comfortable and at peace, and I’m glad he can walk and be on familiar ground. He wants to be near the sheep but no longer lives among them. He rarely ventures more than a few feet from the Pole Barn.

Every day he is waiting by the fence for his private meal.
