Robin’s Spirit. Thanks, Emma.

by Jon Katz

I’ve struggled to find ways to know my granddaughter Robin, who lives in New York City, several hundred miles from me.

My daughter Emma, a photographer and editor living in New York, has found a way to keep me connected to this remarkable child.

She sends me pictures of her taken on weekends as they move about the city.

Her photos are striking; Robin is always the sole subject in a background that speaks of New York City in one way or another.

They are understated, beautifully composed, and mainly capture and focus the spirit of Robin, which becomes more robust and powerful by the month and year.

This photo captures this dynamic Robin, who brims with energy and confidence.

She will be whatever she wants to be. I doubt I will live to see what she ultimately becomes, but I am grateful to see her spirit screaming to come out.

Robin has a powerful spirit; I’ve seen it grow and show itself in these beautiful photographs, most of which I’ve shared with the people reading the blog.

Emma has her following now, and so does Robin. We’ve seen her grow up. She is creative through and through, and I’m grateful for these photos; I see this remarkable person taking shape year by year.

Photographs tell stories, and unlike people, they don’t lie. Thanks, Emma.

  1. Perhaps another Willa Cather girl in your family? Striking photo of her ßpirit. How wonderful not no one seems to squash it!

  2. Wow, dramatic, her spirit shines through. And she is standing on a boulder that I assume was left when the ice sheet stopped at the end of the last ice age 12,000 years ago in mid-Brooklyn.
