Visiting My New Friend (Who Seems To Have Another Friend)

by Jon Katz

A week after Applegate, I visited my friend,  the horse without a name (he has one, but I’m not using it for his own protection).

He came down the hill to come and visit me – I didn’t have an apple with me- and I was surprised to see another horse follow him down. We just hung out with one another for a bit.

The second horse paid little or no attention to me, but my friend and I exchanged looks for a minute or two, I did get to look into those eyes.

I haven’t heard a peep from all those horse lovers who thought me something of a war criminal for giving my horse friend an apple. They come, and they go.

I don’t know where they go, but they remind me of a block of crows or starlings who come and yell and squawk and then fly off in formation to look for some other thing to shout about.

I like this friendship. We seem comfortable together, and I’ll visit him over the weekend again if my head cold recedes and I can stop coughing and sneezing.

I’ve had a horse or two living on the farm, but I feel closer to this one than any other horse I’ve known. I don’t tell other people what to do, which makes me an outlier in our society right now, but I recommend looking into the eyes of a horse; it is a spiritual experience all of its own.

My “Mind  Your Own Business” campaign on the blog has been a success so far. I deleted a bunch of messages and overlooked the dozen or so people who just can’t resist the temptation but mean no harm.

Let them have their say.

Tolerance is good, and so are boundaries. I’m learning how to mix the two. I’m finding it’s never too late to grow up.

  1. For someone who insists he has a new mind, his own business campaign, you certainly do dwell on it, and make derogatory remarks about other people. Let it go. Several times over the years, you’ve gotten into the snits and you drag them on. If it’s your new style, one wonders why you bring it up at all. It makes you look petty.

    1. Lorlee, a friend called me the king of snits once, he was correct. I admire your long and hopeless campaign to make me sweet and nicer…I think time is running out..but good luck with it. I’m not sure what a new mind is, though, Lorlee, I don’t think that’s possible yet..

  2. Bring them peppermints, they’ll love you even more. Enjoy them! The saying goes, “the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.”

  3. I’m glad he has a horse friend. Horses are basically herd animals and do best if they have other horses or other animal companions.
