The assignment for Sue Silverstein’s Photography Class (I’ll be teaching some classes) was to take 12 photos of a white piece of paper. It was an assignment modified by Visual Artist Denis Defibaugh called Beautiful From Nothing.
The young artists of Bishop Gibbons made a great deal of beauty out of nothing, from wrinkled paper to a video arcade. Come and see.
Art Teacher Sue Silverstein says she urgently needs painting canvas (the 11 x 14 range is acceptable) and also photo paper, even if it’s just a few sheets left in a box. She says she’ll take anything. I’ll also send her some.
Sue is always reluctant to ask people to spend money, but I have been urging her to put a Bishop Gibbons Art Supplies Amazon Wish List together so we can also give her the support she needs as the program takes off like a rocket. She could use the help, and she deserves it.
She has finally agreed. We are planning it for the first week in March.
If you can help her with painting canvases and photo paper, that would be a great help to these children, whose creativity is exploding daily.
I couldn’t go to school today; there was too much Covid and other stuff there, but I asked Sue to send me some examples of the first visual and photographic art from her class.
It’s remarkable what she and her students have done together.
The address at the school, if you can help, is Sue Silverstein, Art Program, Bishop Gibbons High School, 2600 Albany Street, Schenectady, New York, 12304.
I hope we can support them; some real artists are being born, and Sue has their full attention.
Annabella, a 12th grader, took the above photo in a video arcade.
It’s exciting to see these students apply their culture to their art and see the two as one thing. This is a lot better than having their faces in smart phones all day.
It’s exciting to see the creative energy coming out of these kids. I’m urging Sue to put up another art supplies wish list. I know she needs it, and it will help us support her as her art program takes off. We’re shooting for an Amazon Bishop Gibbons Art Supply Wish List in early March.
One of the assignments is to paint on black canvas.
At first, I thought this was a flower, but it is twisted paper. Very smart.
The art class also makes blankets for poor children in the Albany area. Thanks for the fabrics many of you have sent. The address is Sue Silverstein, Bishop Gibbins High School, 2600 Albany Street, Schenectady, N.Y., 12304
