When Dogs Support Me

by Jon Katz

I’m drawn to support and advocate for dogs because my dogs have always supported me and helped me navigate the different passages of my sometimes difficult life. I owe them and am grateful for them. When people were not around for me, my dogs always were.

I was especially aware of this morning when I got my surgical boot on (hopefully for the last few times) with Maria’s help. Since I got the boot, Zinnia has come over and rested her head on it when she sleeps.

I’m not sure why this is happening. It feels as if she is trying to comfort me or show me that she understands, which great therapy dogs often do.

After I got the shoe on, I meditated. Zinnia stayed on my boot, and Bud jumped up on my knee and just put his head on it. I never pretend to know what dogs were thinking, but I appreciated the comfort they bring me. I am always surprised by their sensitivity.

I want to return the favor. You can apply for use here if you need help with a doe. (Just to be open,  I do charge a fee for the first half hour.)

Zinnia rested her head on my lap. Zinnia is not a demonstrative dog; she is quiet and watches people closely. She is not a dog to make a big fuss, wiggle around, or jump. She offers quiet and soft love and leaves a wake of smiles behind her wherever she goes.
