Making A Soft Sky In Lightroom. There Is A Difference. I’ll Be Learning Forever

by Jon Katz

I love taking what I call “soft” landscape photos. The Leica is good at that; the Iphone tends to be too literal for me sometimes, and the photos can turn out colder than I want them to be. I was having this problem with the pictures I’ve been taking of the landscape just off of the farm. The foreground was too dark, and the sky too bright.

I took the image into Lightroom – I’m still taking some Lightroom lessons – and I was able to soften the photo (above) in the way I wished.

I brought up the white in the foreground to balance the photo between the top and bottom and then use the Soft Mist option, my favorite. I also softened the blue sky to balance against the snow.

The above photo is the softer one I wanted; the one below is the harsher one I started with. At first, the changes feel mile. But when you look at them for a while, it’s clear that they are two very different photographs. The softer, more nuanced photo is Leica’s specialty.

The Iphone 13 is a great everyday go-to picture.

People tell me Lightroom is easy to use but not, I suspect, for dyslexics. I’m sticking with it; I’m getting there. Thanks for coming along with me; I appreciate it.

  1. Perspective.
I think everything you photograph, and edit is awesome. Definitely sellable. Something you might consider.
Because you may not have “mastered” some of the software you’re using maybe you don’t see the greatness that us non-photographer lay people see. It’s definitely there.
I so look forward to what you’ll come up with next.
