Flower Therapy, January 28, 2003. A Peaceful Birthday

by Jon Katz

Spring is just a few months away; my flowers will not be too far behind.

Today is Maria’s birthday, and we are having the quiet day she wanted. We went out for breakfast, did some chores, sat and read, and I fell asleep; it was peaceful. She took Zinnia and Fate and went out into the woods for a long walk. That is her meditation.

We are going to the Shift Food stand for one of their amazing salads to bring home for dinner and then back home.

Tonight we’ll listen to a quartet called Los Sugar Kings on the Caffe Lena TV stream and start reading new books – we finished our current ones today within a couple of hours of one another. I’m trying out a popular British mystery series,  the Ruth Galloway Mysteries by Elly Griffiths.  She’s an archeologist who solves crimes.

We have no desire to go out tonight or see anyone. Tomorrow, in honor of Maria’s birthday, we might do the same thing. This day is a celebration of our love and a rolling meditation. It’s sweet. Solitude and quiet is a gift in our distracting world, and it was the birthday present Maria most wanted.

It’s a gift for me as well.

But we have to have our flower therapy. Spring is just weeks away.
