We love having songbirds around the farmhouse, and it is fascinating to stand away and watch them zoom in one after another to get some of the birdseed we put out every day.
When it is cold and icy, and the ground is covered with snow, the traffic to the feeders intensifies.
They soar in and grab a seed or two and rush off to eat or hide it in their nests.
Helping these birds eat and survive is gratifying. It feels good. This week, we’ll have to refill the feeder once a day.
I too am a bird caretaker. I feel it is the one thing I do consistently that is good, needed and not for me. I have been amused by a few birds that will hop across my porch rail peering into my windows, if the feeder is empty. I see this as a kind of appreciation for meeting their needs .
