Photo Journal, December 29, Donkeys And Birds

by Jon Katz

I had my walk-around this afternoon with my camera. It’s my favorite time; the donkeys flirt with me, the birds are all over the feeders, the dogs are beginning to tire and quiet, and the sun is down low to the west. It’s the photographer’s light. I even caught the heat coming out of Fanny’s nose.

Light. I went into Maria’s studio to help her make a video about her new scarves, and the feeder was right outside her window, so with some patience, I got to see the birds.

The donkeys, as usual, charmed me into some alfalfa treats, and they always knew what I wanted.

Outside, the birds keep a wary eye on me and my camera, I think they see me as a giant hawk. They lose their shyness and caution inside Maria’s studio and go back and forth to the feeder.
