The Zoom Idea: Another Great Discussion

by Jon Katz

The Zoom Experiment has improved every week; we had an excellent morning discussion – perhaps the best,  about a dozen things – music, the Internet, education, ukuleles, creativity, and women, the media.

Wendy read a beautiful poem about October. Ron sat with his dog on his lap, we covered a lot of ground, and every one of the eight participants got to speak.

Maria joined us again and talked about the origins of her art while Zinnia chewed on what I call her  “Zoom” bones. I keep her occupied while we talk.

It was a good idea to keep the group small. One man came on and muted himself and just stared. I tossed him out, or maybe he left. I closed the meeting at:9:08.

There are several teachers, two or three ukelele players, Bob, who lives on Jack London’s houseboat in California, and Ron, a cherished friend, a minister who visits nursing homes in Ohio. Angela, a school teacher in Orange County, New York, joined the talk for the first time. I hope she returns.

The Zoom meeting means a lot to me; it reminds me that the news is way off whack; there are so many warm, caring, and decent people worldwide. I hope they enjoy it, I think they are, but it means an awful lot to me.

Talking live and face to face with human beings is affirming, grounding, and precious. It is something I need to do.

We went over the allotted hour, I could have stayed all morning, but we all have to move on. I am looking head, I can’t wait for next week.

  1. Once again, utterly delightful. Thank you so much for doing this Jon. I love the spirit of goodness around everything you and Maria create, it draws me in, and connecting with you both and with others who share the same space is a breath of refreshment and joy to me as well. Much gratitude for you and what you do.

  2. I can’t say how happy I am that I figured out how to get everything working to be part of todays Zoom call. It was so nice to listen to others and to be able to join in the conversation without concern that my thoughts wouldn’t fit in . Thank you Jon for this experiment, I’m looking forward to next week!
