I made it my mission a few years ago to do a good deed every day. Today is Bouquet Day. I deliver flowers from my garden bed. I brought an elderly woman a companion Cat. I got a needy student at Bishop Gibbons some new earbuds. I brought flowers to my Mansion neighbors and an immigrant farm trailer up the road.
I am doing good, and doing good might not cost much if any, money.
Doing good challenges me to think of the small but important things. It pushes me to be human and kind.
It might be complimenting someone for their work, being patient with a voice on the phone, getting a refugee child some winter shoes, or sending art supplies to Sue Silverstein.
Or it might be bringing a companion animal to someone at the Mansion, which I’ve done perhaps a dozen times, thanks to the Army Of Good.
Today, three four small acts of great kindness made a difference to people. And it isn’t even noon..
The first was bringing a life-like cat to a lonely Mansion resident who wanted something to hug and sleep with.
The cat, made for the elderly, mews and moves when scratched on the head. And it is so life-like that the aides often mistake them for real cats.
I was uncertain when I bought the first companion animals, but after seeing just how much they mean to some residents and how much comfort they provide, I’m happy to get them.
The second two good deeds relate to Bouquet Friday Day – bringing flowers from my garden people. Today, one bouquet goes to my Amish neighbors up the road, the Millers.
They love flowers but don’t grow them for reasons I don’t quite understand yet. I suspect it’s considered frivolous to grow flowers just for sight, but all right to love having them around.
I’m also bringing a bouquet to a migrant farm trailer just a few miles up the road at a local farm.
I’ve been dropping them off at the door all summer on Friday morning and get waves, and thanks shouted at me as I leave.
Last week, I got a bag of homemade tortillas left for me, with a note thanking me for the flowers.
(My new applewood stand is next to my chair. Handy, handy…)
I don’t stop to talk to them and stay around to chat – they speak little English. I don’t wish to make them nervous – it’s just about flowers.
There is another good deed for today.
A teacher at Bishop Gibbons let me know that one of her students, who suffers from anxiety and loves listening to music on earpads, calmed and steadied him.
She sensed something was wrong, and he told her his ear buds were stolen last week. Music is not just entertainment to him, but essential.
She asked if I could help. I said I could. A new pair of ear pads are on the way to his home this morning.
My Do Good Daily plan has worked out for me.
Every time I do good, it feels good. That keeps me level and grounded.
You are an inspiration Jon. Thank you
Love you little table, that came out beautiful. That photo was very interesting, really all of your photo I enjoy seeing every morning when I wake up. ?
You have inspired me to do the same, thank you!
Thanks back..
Your apple tree table is beautiful. The table top looks like the bottom of a foot; an elephant foot or a bear foot :o)
