Photo Journal: My Magical Morning In (Mostly) Black And White. Today, I Couldn’t Seem To Stop Taking Pictures

by Jon Katz

I had a magical morning, and I want to share it with you; I mostly used Monochrome; it needs more attention from me and vice versa. Summer flowers are hard to resist in color.

I love using this camera; it takes the moodiest and most beautiful pictures in the right light. This morning, the first light flooded the room as Maria sat down and lit a fire to warm up the living room. It was a special moment.

In fact, it seemed an almost holy moment to me, and the Monochrome captured that moment.

But sometimes, they are just as beautiful in black and white, where we have to use our imaginations but also get a special feeling. Black and white is the medium of souls.

I’ve worn myself out today. Got up early, went to the Mansion, drove around doing chores, took a lot of photos, and wrote many blog posts. Enough of me. I’m done. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

Maria and I went out over the weekend and collected rocks. I was chosen to design a Zen rock display instead of all those rotting and short-lived plants. I like getting to be the artist, and I liked the rock formation, and so do the fish.

Three of the pieces are slate.

Zinnias have more character than almost any flower I see.

Maria was hoping for a vegetable stir-fry tonight, and being the new A 1 Wonderful Husband, I rushed to oblige right before breakfast. I made Farro oats, one of my favorite grains. Cooked in two quarts of water (and oat milk for me), put in a boiling pot briefly, and then simmered for 30 minutes. I added broth, butter, and virgin olive oil.

Today, the purple Zinnia said goodbye. I told her she did an excellent job this summer, and I thank you. Flowers die well.

Soul Of A Dog, always at my side, always at my feet; today, she looked a little worried. She hasn’t quite recovered from my falling down the stairs a couple of months ago.

I’m not a massive fan of mums, but I love the buds they create before they bloom. Maria insists I will treasure these mums, and usually, she is right. I love the softness of this photo. It is almost like a dream.

I finally wore myself out, but I had great fun today; the day felt special. I’m done for the day, have a peaceful evening. I’m cooking a tofu and Farro grain and vegetable stir-fry and setting down with a mystery.

  1. I’m not surprised Zinnia hasn’t forgotten your fall. As I remember, Rose never forgot the squirrel on the electrical wire! I don’t think they ever forget the things that concern them the most. I guess you’ll just have to be especially careful!

  2. You ARE an A#1 Husband, indeed! Could it be that Zinnia looks sleepy (although I agree with Susie; dogs do remember things). All your photos are fantastic.
