Breaking News: The “Imperious Hen” Potholders Of The Month…I Love It.

by Jon Katz

I could tell right away that this wouldn’t be just another project from Maria, she was excited about it, and I was excited to hear about it.

Inspired by my “Imperious Hens” title, she is making some potholders composed of her different “Imperious Hen” drawings of locations on the farm where they hang out.

It’s true; they’ve become a thing, people ask for Hen photos every day.

I’m glad I could finally contribute something to a Maria quilt or potholder.

She asked if I would mind coming into her studio and taking a video of her talking about the Imperious Hens project.

When I got in there, I saw that she was hot, exhausted, and spinning. It is awful hot here today, and she has been working hard all day.

We put off the video until tomorrow.

She said she also thinks a couple of these potholders – all handsewn and written, might become hanging pieces of some kind.

If they become potholders, they will be $35 plus $5 shipping. It takes a long time for her to make them.

I suggested that she might think about making one or two into small hanging fiber paintings. She rarely listens to my ideas about art, nor should she, but who knows?

My guess is that most will be potholders, and if Maria is in an experimental mood, some might be small hanging pieces, something new and exciting for her.

You can follow this project on her blog.

I’ll be the last to know, but I love the Imperious chicken project, potholders or not. I told her they would fly out of her studio and into the world.

Video tomorrow.
