Zinnia’s Other Place

by Jon Katz

Zinnia has two unique places in our home; she is almost always in one or the other when we are here.

The first is my study; she curls up next to my feet and is still and comfortable.

The other is the doorway of Maria’s study, where she sits in the rain and heat on a beautiful day like today. Zinnias is a Yellow Lab, she is bred to stick with her human, and she does. She is an excellent companion to us.

Fate is always watching the gate, hoping to get to work, and Bud is busy hunting moles and squirrels and chipmunks and snakes.

Zinnia is always with us. I take her most places with me in the car when it isn’t hot. And she is always with me when I am writing.

Today, I came out to look at a quilt Maria was working on, and Zinnia was sitting at the door, on her throne, taking in the world. I love seeing her there. She has never walked on a quilt or fabric on the floor.
